As a future art teacher, I believe the next generation of artists is something that we need to nurture and encourage to grow. When I was a high schooler, my art teachers were two of the most influential people in my life. Without their support, I have no idea where I would have ended up now, 6 years later. Many people think art is a “waste of time” or something that isn’t worth pursuing because of the challenge of making it a career, and especially growing up in Texas, art is one of the first things to be cut when the budget is tight because sports take priority in this culture. I want to encourage everyone to support a young artist today. You might not think your support is doing anything, but that artist might have been on the verge of giving up and your “Hey, I really like what you did with xyz in this piece, keep it up” could have given them the push to keep going and make another work of art. Additionally, if you have the financial ability to, buy a piece of art or commission one. There have been plenty of times as a kid that someone buying my art allowed me to get a little treat or do something with my friends that I might not have been able to afford otherwise. Even as an adult, there has been more than once that someone purchasing a piece meant that I could buy groceries or pay my rent. As a final note, I want everyone to think of an adult that made a positive difference in your life as a child, and try to pay forward that kindness today.
