Burnout is probably one of my biggest obstacles as an artist. I go through periods of time where I will be super productive, and then nothing. I find that it typically happens when I try to do something as a task, which as an art student and someone who wants to use art as a job, is not a great thing. I recently had a revelation that I haven’t made art for the sake of making art in probably close to three years. It’s been all about school assignments or commissions or something made with the explicit purpose of making money. I have decided I am taking a break from art projects that aren’t mandatory for school. Since this decision, I immediately felt a decrease in the pressure and dread that had existed whenever I tried to do artistic endeavors. I have started several projects and actually have the motivation to finish them. I feel like all artists (or creative people) need to pause and take some time for themselves and what they want to do.
